From Metal Build-Up to Clean Performance: A KTM Rider’s AMSOIL Experience
Chris Spillane shares his hands-on experience testing multiple well-known motorcycle oils across KTM dirt bikes. Using magnetic drain plugs to track engine wear, the results were clear - AMSOIL delivered noticeably smoother shifting and a dramatic reduction in metal particles over time.
My experience trying to find the best oil for our KTM dirt bikes, after disappointing results with other recognised motorcycle oil brands.
KTM bikes come with mag drain plugs so it was easy to see wear indication in the engine by metal particles on the mag plug.
We were running Motorex KTM recommended oil and after every day of riding there was some metal particles on the mag plugs.
We then tried Mobil one and the results were terrible, with unacceptable amounts of metal on the mag plugs.
We tried Motul and had similar results to Motorex.
Next we tried the bikes on Amsoil.
The first noticeable difference was that the gearbox shifting improved with all the bikes and when the mag plugs were checked there was very little metal particles, these could have already been in the engine and were just getting picked up.
Over the next few oil changes there was big reduction in metal particles visible on the mag plugs, most of the time nothing visible.
This was my real world experience trying to find the best oil for our motorcycle engines and Amsoil has been the only oil I have used since. I use it in all my vehicles and equipment from lawnmower to tractor with excellent results.
On another note, I have a friend who's two children raced KTM 2 stroke motocross bikes. He was using KTM Motorex 2 stroke oil and often complained to me that the bikes had trouble with spark plug and power valve carbon fouling.
I convinced him to try Amsoil Dominator 2 stroke oil, after a whole season of racing on Dominator the bikes didn't get any fouled spark plugs, power valves stayed carbon free and to our surprise the piston had no carbon build up.
